The Story

Gypsophila repens 'Rosea' Seeds

While the tall white Gypsophila is famous for bouquets, this charming creeping cousin is the hero of the rockery. Gypsophila repens 'Rosea' forms a low, dense mat of grey-green foliage that becomes smothered in clouds of tiny, star-shaped, pale pink flowers throughout the summer.

It is the ultimate "softener." Plant it at the edge of a raised bed, in a dry stone wall, or along a gravel path, and watch it tumble over the hard edges like a pink waterfall. It thrives in sun and poor soil, making it one of the most reliable and romantic ground cover plants you can grow.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Gypsophila repens is a Hardy Perennial.

It comes back year after year. In mild winters, it keeps its grey-green leaves (semi-evergreen), but in harsh winters it may die back to the roots and re-emerge in spring.

The Lime Lover: This plant naturally grows on limestone slopes. It absolutely loves chalky or alkaline soil. If you have "thin" soil where other plants starve, this Gypsophila will feel right at home.

🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

This is an easy-to-grow alpine that dislikes wet feet.

Germination:
Sow indoors from February to June. Scatter the seeds on the surface of gritty compost. Do not cover themβ€”they need light to germinate. Keep warm (20Β°C). Germination takes 10-21 days.

Where to Sow:
It demands full sun and **excellent drainage**. It hates heavy, wet clay. If you have clay soil, plant it in a container or mix plenty of grit into the planting hole.

Care While Growing:
Once established, it is incredibly drought tolerant. After the main flush of flowers fades in late summer, trim the plant back with shears. This keeps the mat tight and neat and often encourages a second, smaller flush of blooms in autumn.

  • 🌿 Common Thyme: The Scented Carpet. Thyme offers a darker, evergreen foliage contrast to the lighter grey-green of the Gypsophila. Both love hot, dry conditions and look great growing in gravel.
