The Story

This intriguing plant is a stem succulent, beginning its life as a water storing caudex, its spines arranged in a spiral. Native to Madagascar, hence the common name. Pachypodium means 'thick foot' which refers to its succulent stem, which stores water and gives structure to the plant. As it grows upwards, the foliage also does, creating a crown with leaves, which fall and then re-grow depending on the season. Much like a Euphorbia, the Pachypodium contains poisonous sap, it also grows hooked spines, so avoid if you have young children or curious pets.

Rating- Easy

LOVES- A bright, warm location. Liberal watering when the soil is dry in Spring and Summer, but reduce to about once a month in Winter.
